Personality and Story
Kanako Sasa, usually referred to by her surname, Sasa, is a girl who is a fifth grader in Shuichi's class at the beginning of Wandering Son. She is sometimes called Kanabun (カナブン?, lit. drone beetle) by her younger brother and Chizuru. She makes her first appearance in chapter two of the manga, and in episode one in the anime. She is childhood friends with Chiba, Takatsuki and Nitori. Sasa has a deep sense of empathy, and because of that, she acts as a mediator between her friends in troublesome times, and tries not to leave anyone alone and upset. As her friends grow older, they become increasingly distant. She eventually gets caught in the conflict between Saori and Takatsuki over their romantic conflict with Shuichi.
She has been friends with Yoshino since pre-school, and later becomes close with Chizuru. Sasa is an innocent, childish girl who is always upbeat and encouraging, and who does not have many worries aside from her friends' quarrels and disagreements. She tends to be a handful for her mother, who picks out her clothes for her and even helps her get ready for school in the morning. She mentions that if she thinks too hard about something, her brain becomes itchy.
Appearances
Kanako Sasa has brown hair that is usually kept tied up. She is a short, energetic girl who looks much younger than she actually is. She thinks of herself as everyone's friend, and becomes distressed when her friends fight among themselves. She wears her hair in a little girl's hair style called, " Twin Tails ". She looks a little similar to Saori, but is much shorter and cuter.

In the Japanese language, the first name "Kanako" is feminine, and means a flower child, or a child of the summer flowers.
